CFexpress and UHS-II SD cards are not interchangeable upgrades. They solve different problems in field-media work: burst depth, sustained recording, heat, reader speed, backup time, device compatibility, and the cost of carrying enough cards to avoid risky reuse.

  4. Test the reader path. A fast card behind a slow reader or hub wastes time in the field.

Where UHS-II still wins

UHS-II SD cards are small, widely supported, and easier to buy in multiples. If your camera records long H.264 or H.265 clips at moderate bitrates, UHS-II may be more than enough. The savings can go into more cards, a better reader, or a rugged backup drive.

Where CFexpress earns its cost

CFexpress makes sense when the camera’s highest-quality modes require it or when dump speed saves real production time. It also leaves more headroom for future cameras. The tradeoff is cost, heat, reader compatibility, and the temptation to buy too few cards.

Label cards and rotate them physically. The most expensive media mistake is often not a failed card; it is a card that gets reused because the team cannot tell whether the footage was already copied and verified.
