Quick answer: Do not choose SD Express or UHS-II by peak speed alone. Start with the camera or logger’s supported bus, required sustained write rate, reader support, heat behavior, backup workflow, and what happens when a card must be replaced in the field.
Drone, 360-camera, action-camera, and robot-logging workflows all create the same temptation: buy the fastest-looking memory card and assume the field kit is fixed. That is not how media reliability works.
The SD Association says SD Express brings PCIe and NVMe concepts into the SD and microSD form factors, with published material describing transfer rates up to 3940MB/s when supported. UHS modes follow a different compatibility path. The important word is supported.
Host support comes first
A card cannot use SD Express behavior in a host that only supports legacy or UHS interfaces. A fast card may still work, but not at the mode a buyer expected. That is why the first check is the camera, drone controller, field recorder, SBC, or reader specification.
That check should include the reader too. A card that records properly but crawls during offload can still break the field workflow if the team has only one laptop, one battery window, and no second verified copy before packing up.
For robotics teams, the same rule applies to field loggers. A microSD card in an embedded computer, a USB reader in a laptop, and a camera slot in a 360 rig may all bottleneck differently.

Sustained writes beat headline numbers
Peak transfer rates are useful for understanding the standard. They do not prove that a specific card, host, enclosure, or camera will sustain a demanding recording mode in heat. Drone and 360 workflows can be unforgiving because dropped frames or corrupted files may not be obvious until after the shot.
A better test plan records the actual mode: resolution, codec, bitrate, ambient temperature, clip length, and whether the camera throttles or stops. Then the offload test measures how long it takes to move the files twice: once to the main drive and once to a backup.
Reader and backup workflow
SD Express can be attractive when the whole chain supports it. But a field kit also needs readers, cables, laptop ports, storage, and power that keep up. If the only compatible reader stays at the studio, the fast card does not help on a two-day shoot or robot field test.
UHS-II can remain practical when the camera and reader path are mature, predictable, and good enough for the required bitrate. The wrong comparison is “newer versus older.” The right comparison is “which complete workflow has fewer failure points?”

For creators and robot builders, memory cards are reliability components. SD Express is promising when the host and reader path are ready. UHS-II can still be the safer choice when the workflow is proven. Either way, the field kit should be tested with real recording modes before a trip, match, inspection, or demo day.
