AprilTag boards are often treated like disposable printouts until a robot demo fails in front of an audience. The code may be unchanged, the camera may be focused, and the pipeline may be configured correctly, but the printed target can still bend, glare, fade, wrinkle, or get mounted at a different angle after transport.

A tag that was printed cleanly can become unreliable if it is bent, laminated with a glossy surface, taped at an angle, or placed under a light that blows out one side of the image.

A storage and transport checklist

  1. Use a rigid backing. Foam board, card stock, or another flat substrate is easier to remount consistently.
  2. Protect the surface. Avoid scratches, wrinkles, smudges, and glossy glare.
  3. Label the back, not the front. Keep the visible marker area clean.
  4. Pack with the camera kit. The target, mount, clamps, and exposure notes should travel together.
  5. Photograph the setup. A quick reference photo helps rebuild height and angle at the venue.
  6. Bring a spare. Reprinting at the event is rarely the best recovery plan.

Pre-demo checks

Before changing code, verify that the camera sees the board under venue lighting, that exposure is locked or controlled, that the board is not warped, and that the target size in the pipeline matches the printed size. If the robot detects the tag only at one distance or angle, inspect the physical setup first.

What to put in the demo kit

A good robot-vision kit should include the printed targets, a rigid storage sleeve, a tape measure, spare mounting hardware, a small level if height matters, cleaning cloth, and a one-page setup note. Teams should also retire damaged targets.
